SDI: Less Lethal Munitions

SDI is a division of Byrna Technologies Inc., a technology company specializing in innovative less lethal weapons and munitions and the maker of the Byrna^® HD personal security device, the first compact, handheld, long-range pistol available without a firearms license to protect homes and businesses in the 48 continental United States. SDI develops and manufactures less lethal munitions for the Military, Law Enforcement, and Corrections markets that are effective, reliable, and safer than traditional firearms ammunition.

Our History

The Company was launched in 2005 as a research and development company focused on the development of 40mm less lethal munitions for the modern military and specialized law enforcement personnel. Our products are an alternative to what was previously available that have been found to be less effective in meeting less lethal requirements. In 2018 we expanded our research to develop less lethal equipment suitable for the consumer and private security markets and in 2019 we launched the Byrna HD. In 2020, in response to the positive market response to the Byrna HD and growing demand for less lethal self-defense weapons we changed our name to Byrna Technologies Inc. and our new research focus to the Byrna line of products.

SDI’s Family of Blunt Impact Projectiles (BIP) are designed for military, peacekeeping, homeland security, law enforcement, correctional services, and private sector security. They are ideal for crowd control scenarios and can adapt to any 40mm caliber standard issue weapons and grenade launchers. Our patented rounds have been developed for accuracy at longer ranges in order to ensure the greater safety of the user. They provide an effective means of incapacitating subjects without causing lethal injury. This is due to the unique design of the BIP that uses an innovative collapsible head to mitigate kinetic energy, thus making it highly effective even at a very close range.

SDI less-lethal munitions are a safer and more accurate alternative to previous solutions such as 12-gauge stabilizer rounds, 37/40mm rubber bullets, wooden batons, 40 mm rubber ball canisters and bean bags. SDI now offers more efficient alternatives to these less lethal munitions used for crowd and riot control. SDI develops and markets payload delivery variants of its less lethal munitions that can be adapted to contain liquid and gas agents. SDI’s less lethal munitions payloads can also carry liquid and powdered marker rounds to identify organizers and agitators of riots and unlawful assemblies.
